Never before had any single event had such a global
impact - Covid-19 taught us the lesson that rich
and poor, developed and developing communities
share one finite world, and are depending on one
another for their well-being and safety.
Large international corporations had to slow
down their activities, while thousands of small
businesses disappeared for good. After fifty
consecutive years, even South Africa’s longest
running art competition had to decide to skip
a year out of concern for the safety of artists,
judges and the public. But things are looking
up again. The vaccine has arrived, with the
promise that the global pandemic could be
brought under control. Planning for the
next Sasol New Signatures Art Competition
2021 could go ahead.
Since Sasol became involved, three
decades ago, this competition grew in
stature from a largely local competition
to a truly national competition; while
Sasol’s generous sponsorship gave it
international standing.
