6.2 Grid terminology
1. Modular grid
4. Row
A modular grid has consistent horizontal
divisions from top to bottom in addition
to vertical divisions from left to right.
These modules govern the placement
of all the elements in the layout.
A horizontal division of a page or text.
The height and number of rows is variable.
2. Margin
The area from the edge of the page trim
to the boundary of the layout area of the
page. Margin sizes are variable.
3. Column
A vertical division of a page or text.
The width and number of columns
is variable.

The space between columns and rows.
It is used to create space between different
types of content in a piece of communication
(i.e the space between columns of text).

6. Module
An individual unit of space within a grid.
Any number of modules can be combined
to create fields.

7. Field
An area of any amount of modules occupied
by either type or image. Endless variations
are possible.
