3 TYPEFACES & TYPOGRAPHY 3.4 TYPOGRAPHIC PRINCIPLES
SASOL CI MANUAL
3.4.3 Spacing
The relationship that letters have with each other is important.
Paying attention to the individual letters and words, and not just the
paragraph as a whole will help create a neat, uniform and “easy” read.
Leading
Without manual kerning
Leading is the space between lines of text.
All leading is not equal. As a general rule,
the smaller the point size, the larger the
leading; the bigger the point size, the
tighter the leading.
Tracking
Tracking is overall letter spacing.
Tracking and kerning and are two related
typographical terms and both refer to
the adjustment of space between
characters of type.
With manual kerning
Kerning
Kerning is selective letter spacing.
Tracking and kerning must be adjusted
where needed based upon the application.
Larger type requires tighter kerning but
less tracking. Smaller type may require
more tracking but less kerning.
Always use the correct typeface to ensure visual consistency. Do not use any other typeface even if it looks the same.
