Sister Gertrude Morgan: The Mystic of New Orleans - Book - Page 8
of her language for clarity and narrative flow but tried to stay true to
her expression. Though I took some creative liberties in the text and illustrations—just as Sister Gertrude did in her paintings—I endeavored
to remain faithful to that which guided the Lamb Bride’s life: Biblical
scripture, her gospel mission, and especially her great love for Jesus. I
am grateful to the photographers whose images in this book help bring
Sister Gertrude to life for those of us who never had the chance to meet
her in person.
Early in her life, Sister was called to spread the gospel with a loud
voice. Whether she was in her art booth at the New Orleans Jazz and
Heritage Festival or holding services inside her small prayer room in the
Lower Ninth Ward, she faithfully kept a homemade cardboard megaphone by her side to amplify her message. Sister Gertrude Morgan was
a dedicated missionary who preached, sang, and painted loudly, showering people with a divine electricity that drew them closer to the love
of God that filled her from head to toe. I hope this book helps you feel
the multisensory delight and numinous light that poured forth from
every corner of her aesthetically and ecstatically anointed life. Amen!
