Sister Gertrude Morgan: The Mystic of New Orleans - Book - Page 74
Mr. Larry introduced me to many people in the art world, including
Bill Fagaly, curator at the New Orleans Museum of Art. And also
Dr. Regenia Perry, an art professor who lived all the way up in
Virginia. Regenia and I corresponded regularly. She purchased
many of my paintings and helped spread the word about my
works. I enjoyed it when she came to visit me in New Orleans and
appreciate how she helped me with some of my personal affairs.
My creations were featured in national exhibitions, including a
show at the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum in Baton Rouge
and one at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City,
organized by Bill Fagaly. Andy Warhol sent Rosemary Kent down
to speak to me for the 1973 issue of Interview magazine. Miss
Rosemary explained to the New York Times that, “Andy was totally
enthralled by her work. It takes a sophisticated eye to see that,
hey, this is not just scribbling, this is something important.”
Soon famous actors began buying my work, including
Vincent Price and Robert Duvall. But I wasn’t just making pretty
pictures, I was spreading the gospel. I hope when people look at
my paintings they feel the Holy Spirit and remember what
Missionary Morgan’s life was all about. Wake up and get in line!
New Jerusalem is on its way!
