Sister Gertrude Morgan: The Mystic of New Orleans - Book - Page 30
Sister Palmore lived up here near this protection levee
when she had that dream of me. At that time, I had
been on the hedges and highway for years and God was
showing that old Christian woman what my life would
be—to call the high hills down level with the valley.
Wake them up, so many are blind and can’t see!
I soon thereafter assumed my role as the
instrument of God’s holy, living Word.
Sometime around 1955, Sister Cora passed away, and
soon after that we sold the mission house. Then in
1956, the Lord called me to illustrate the Bible.
At first I didn’t know how to do that, but soon
Jesus just took hold of my hand!
My first paintings were done with black and white shoe
polish. I painted on whatever was at my disposal—old wooden
doors, cardboard, Tide detergent boxes, strips of weathered
wood, old “for sale” signs, window shades, wood blocks,
cardboard, and paper. Later I used crayons, acrylic paint, ink
pens, and pencils—whatever the Lord provided. One of my
earlier pictures was of Daniel’s vision of the four beasts.
