M
emory has a crucial role in both our faith and our shared history. It connects
us to the past, shapes our identity, informs our present and guides our
actions in the future. Two powerful examples we commemorate are the Christian
practice of Holy Communion and the observance of Remembrance Sunday. Both
observances centre on remembering and call on us to reflect, honour, and learn
from what has come before.
Remembrance Sunday is dedicated to remembering those who sacrificed their
lives in military service for our country particularly during the World Wars.
It is a time to honour the Fallen and reflect on the ultimate price they paid.
Remembrance Sunday keeps alive the lessons of history, reminding us of the
value of peace, the horrors of conflict, and the responsibilities we have to future
generations.
Holy Communion is the profound act of remembrance in the Christian faith. Jesus
instituted this sacred meal on the night he was betrayed and told His disciples to
break and eat bread and to drink wine in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice. As we
partake in the meal, we remember Christ’s sacrifice of dying on the cross so that
we could be forgiven.
Both Holy Communion and Remembrance Sunday show us the transformative
power of memory. By remembering, we are shaped into people who do not forget
the cost of love, sacrifice, and freedom. These memories challenge us today to live
lives of gratitude and responsibility.
We will remember.
