Dear Editors,
The magnificent work carried out by our local businesses such as Hammonds,
Terrys, The Hopbine, The Halfway House, The Star, The Little Bull, The Poet, Moby
Dick Fish and Chips, Grays and the Post offices during the Covid - 19 crisis to keep
us fed and stocked up with takeaways, drinks and a variety of produce has been
a wonderful support for the community. These businesses have worked tirelessly
to help us. But they will need our continued custom as well. The crisis will have
brought about a massive change in our shopping habits with many of us looking
now to local businesses not just short term but long term as well to cater for our
needs. Every burger sold at McDonalds would represent a loss of income to one of
our local outlets.
It comes therefore as a shock to see that TWBC is considering an application
by McDonalds to build yet another fast food outlet at Kippings Cross. If given
the go ahead it would be a body blow to our local businesses who have helped us
so much through the Covid crisis. Hopefully they will continue to. TWBC should
be ashamed at even considering the application and should have rejected it
immediately.
Another point, on a question of healthy eating, despite the sweet talk of
McDonalds who claim their lettuce burgers are providing a healthy option. TWBC
should be seen to be promoting healthy life-styles. The idea of a lettuce leaf
burger from a McDonalds is a contradiction in itself.
Yours sincerely
Simon and Stella Galwey
