At the 1989 Council on Legislaon Rotary
became a dual-gender organisaon which
altered the outlook of our District considerably.
On 1 July 1991, RI decided no more
renumbering and arbitrarily added “0” to every
District in the world, this perming almost
unlimited subdivision of Districts or creaon of
new ones and 1090 came into being.
Perhaps the one most life-changing event in
our history was the onset of covid 19 from
March 2020 for twelve months. This vicious
VTT Uganda
virus caused a series of naonwide lockdowns,
clubs were unable to funcon normally. Face to face meengs were banned
and electronic Zoom meengs took place. It changed the face of Rotary, but
recovery has gradually taken place since 2021 with alteraons in tradional
Rotary ways including the paern of meeng mes and aendance rules which
were relaxed. Annually our District has held weekend Conferences in the Spring
unl the split in 1975 the venue was always Eastbourne and since then,
di昀昀erent venues have been chosen, Bournemouth being the most popular.
Recently shortened Conferences have been held locally and it remains to be
seen if they will connue in this format. A succession of District O昀케cers has
ensured the administraon of the District (including training and regular
meengs) has connued competently.
Currently there are some 57 acve clubs with a membership of about 1,400,
but over the past two decades thirteen clubs have closed, mainly because of
failing membership and lack of
O昀케cers. However, through new
iniaves recovery is happening and
the Rotary way of life is connuing to
昀氀ourish in 1090
