The first two pairs qualified for the 1974 Australian Open Team to join Tim Seres, the automatic
selection, with Roelof Smilde, the partner of his
choice.
The team toured New Zealand and won the
120-board Test Match 278 - 219.
In 1978 the selection method was changed from
Butler to Teams.

an automatic selection, without success.. The
team's main mission was the Far East Championships which they won brilliantly under the captaincy of WA icon Hans Rosendorff.
