Heroes
at Home
On the 23rd of March 2020
Boris Johnson ordered that
UK residents were to stay
at home under lockdown
measures to contain the
Coronavirus pandemic.
As we packed up our desks and
headed home, many of us never
anticipated that lockdown would
last any more than a few weeks.
As a Charity we cancelled events and
began to assess the undeniable cost
of COVID-19. Many of our staff faced
furlough, and the ones that remained
operational were isolated and having
to adapt to a vastly different terrain.
Any shortfall in fundraising could
potentially jeopardise essential
support work and projects.
Although the financial reality of
the pandemic was daunting, we
prioritised bridging the gaps in
geography and isolation to bring
our family back together in a united
cause. Heroes at Home was born.

Our initial aim for Heroes at Home
was to create an online community
that were united in their cheerfulness
in the face of adversity. It was a
reason to get out and use your
hours exercise, chat with friends
on Facebook about the challenges
that you may have taken on, making
sure that no one was left behind. It
soon became abundantly clear that
the #RMfamily has an abundance of
cheerfulness in the face of adversity.
When other charities were finding it
difficult to rally their supporters, RMA
members and our Corps Community
were standing by to take the challenge
by the horns. From karaoke, to knitting,
to climbing Mt Everest on the stairs
to running 10k on your 10th birthday;
young or old; serving or veteran,
Heroes at Home was a hub of bright
ideas and a willingness to take part. We
chose a fundraiser each week to receive
the accolade of ‘lockdown legend’ to
celebrate the ingenuity and resilience
of those who were taking part. Heroes
at Home really did highlight the heroes
of the Royal Marines Association.

We will be forever grateful of the
quick reaction of our members to
respond to the call to action.
At the end of a difficult summer,
we approached the Corps
Birthday and with weary bodies
our comrades chose to raise a
final glass to those amongst
us who needed it the most.
RMA – The Royal Marines
Charity exists to support
serving and veteran
Royal Marines and their
families and during the
COVID-19 pandemic
we found that
they were here to
support us too.
