Own nursery in Bergschenhoek
In order to obtain sufficient space and security for its
selection activities, Rijk Zwaan is looking for a suitable
location near Rotterdam. Not only did they move to a
new office building in 1929, but at the same time Rijk
also bought a piece of land in Bergschenhoek to be
able to select seeds on a larger scale. He buys the
piece of pasture land for 13,800 guilders (an amount
that today would be approximately 115,000 euros).
However, the grassland must first be torn up to make
it suitable for cultivation. In addition, Rijk is installing
the necessary greenhouses and a shed to turn
the land into a modern breeding company. It is an
important milestone in the company’s history.
