Rifleman Jack McCarthy grew up
in Doncaster and attended Ash Hill
Academy. There, he joined the football
team which triggered his keen interest in
sport. Unlike many local jobs, The Rifles
has offered him unique opportunities.
After joining 3 RIFLES, Jack deployed
on operations to Iraq, where, alongside
other responsibilities, he was given the
opportunity to teach the Iraqi Army various
lessons to improve their skills in their
fight against extremism. Back at Battalion,
Jack is a member of the boxing team and
competes at Company level.

Serjeant John Burgess originally joined the
Territorial Army in 2004. Enthusiastically
taking every opportunity granted to him,
he deployed to Afghanistan on 3 separate
occasions, all with other RIFLES battalions.
Keen to maintain these regimental links,
he was commuting to London to parade
with 7 RIFLES so when 8 RIFLES was
formed in 2017, he was quick to transfer.
Leading a busy civilian life, John is the
Company Director and Head of Sales for
a European strand of a large American
business providing safety products for the
industrial sector. A busy role, but he is still
able to make time for his Army Reserve
career, something he takes pride in.
Cadet Company Serjeant Major Jamie
Lofthouse joined E Company (Wakefield
Detachment) Yorkshire North & West Army
Cadet Force in October 2014. He has
represented his Company in the National
RIFLES Cadet Cup Competition, as well
as representing his Company in shooting,
First Aid and orienteering competitions
at regional and national level. In January
2020 Jamie became a 4 STAR Army
Proficiency Certificate (APC) qualified
cadet and was promoted to Cadet
Company Serjeant Major in March. Jamie
is planning to join the Army in the future.
Fred Adamson is a 101-year-old veteran
who served with the Kings Own Yorkshire
Light Infantry (KOYLI) during WWII. Prior to
fighting in Europe, Fred served in Iceland
from 1940-42. He landed on Gold Beach
on D-Day and was involved in furious
fighting during the Battle of Normandy. He
fought through locations across France,
Belgium, Holland and Germany and in
1944 was wounded by shrapnel on the
Dutch and Belgium border. After the war in
Europe ended, he also served in Italy and
Austria. Fred was married to his wife for
70 years and is an active member of the
KOYLI Association.
