LOCAL INTEREST
There has been a barracks on the site
where Peninsula Barracks now stands
since 1769. The buildings we now see
originate from 1894 when a fire destroyed
much of the old King’s House. While it
was rebuilt, The Rifle Depot was closed,
and the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and Rifle
Brigade (both antecedent regiments of
The Rifles) relocated to Gosport. The
barracks reopened in 1904. The barracks
was sold in 1994 with many buildings
becoming private residences and the
parade square landscaped with gardens
and fountains. The remaining buildings
now hold The Regimental Headquarters
of The Rifles along with Winchester’s
Military Quarter.
The Light Division Chapel and Garden of
Remembrance can be found in Sir John
Moore Barracks, Army Training Regiment
Winchester.
Winchester’s Military Quarter is a
grouping of six regimental museums and
Home/Regimental Headquarters situated
within yards of each other on a historic
site, close to the city centre. Both The
Rifles and Royal Green Jackets Museums
are to be found here.
Winchester College CCF is affiliated to
The Rifles.
In 1904 Green Jacket Close was opened
in St Cross to provide homes for disabled
Riflemen returning from the Crimean War.
It is now run by The Rifles Benevolent
Trust and has 21 housing units which are
available on application to all members
of the Serving, Forming and Antecedent
Regiments of The Rifles.
The Rifles has the freedom of Winchester
and has exercised this on many parades
marching at a pace of 140 a minute from
the Guildhall up the hill to Peninsula
Barracks, behind The Band and Bugles
of The Rifles that are based in Worthy
Down.
There is a monthly ‘Turning of the Pages’
service in Winchester Cathedral where
the fallen from the Rifle Brigade and the
King's Royal Rifle Corps are remembered.
The Green Jackets Ground St Cross
is a cricket ground used by St Cross
Symondians Cricket Club. The ground
was first leased to the Rifle Brigade
and since 1885 it has been leased to
the Green Jackets Club. The ground is
currently owned by the trustees of the
nearby ancient Hospital of St Cross.
A bronze statue of General Sir John
Moore, the founding father of The
Rifles, watches over all those that enter
the barracks named after him on the
Harestock Road.
