Major John Howard commanded
the 180-strong D Company of
the 2nd Battalion, Oxford and
Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, the
first formed unit to land in Normandy
on D-Day, 6 June 1944. In a gliderborn ‘coup de main’, the Airborne
Forces seized the bridges over the
River Orne and Caen Canal, thus
securing the left flank of the Allied
invasion. Major Howard was awarded
a Distinguished Service Order (DSO)
for his part in the battle. Before the
war, Major Howard was a Policeman

Lieutenant Will Rooney joined the
Army in May 2018 at the age of 24.
After commissioning from The Royal
Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS),
he subsequently joined his chosen
Battalion, 1 RIFLES. With some initial
defence engagement in Kazakhstan
and Holland, Will then deployed to
The Falkland Islands on Op FIRIC.
The rich history of the antecedent
regiment of the Oxfordshire &
Buckinghamshire Light Infantry was a
huge influencing factor in his desire to
become a part of The Rifles.
