TSuvla Bay (1915) - The 1st Battalion had their baptism of fire whenthey landed at Suvla Bay on 8 Aug 1915 as part of the ill-fated Gallipolicampaign. The Battalion suffered dreadfully from battle casualties andsickness due to the harsh conditions. Over 1000 men served at Suvla andwhen evacuated in December there were only 79 fit men. The Battaliondid good work and was specifically mentioned by the Commander InChief Sir Ian Hamilton for their part in the landing at Suvla Bay.South Africa (1899-1902) - During the Second Boer war, theHerefordshire Rifle Volunteers contributed manpower to two VolunteerService Companies, which served alongside the 2nd Battalion King’sShropshire Light Infantry. The first company arrived in South Africa inApril 1900 and saw action alongside 2 KSLI, including the capture ofPretoria. The second company was deployed in 1901, where theywere employed garrisoning key positions and escorting supplytrains. The Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers were awarded thebattle honour for South Africa and this was carried forwardto The Herefordshire Regiment. The Regiment’s fallen arerecorded on the South Wall of Hereford Cathedral.Ypres (1918) - 1 Herefords saw extensive service, afterGallipoli throughout the Palestine campaign, includingthe Battles of Beersheba, Jerusalem and Tel Asur.In 1918, the Battalion was deployed to the EuropeanTheatre, where they fought in some of the last greatbattles of the War. They saw action at the Second Battleof the Marne, a decisive Allied victory, before taking partin the Fifth Battle of Ypres. There the Battalion saw heavyfighting at the re-capture of Mount Kemmel and in thevicinity of Menin.
