Suvla Bay (1915) - The 1st Battalion had their baptism of fire when
they landed at Suvla Bay on 8 Aug 1915 as part of the ill-fated Gallipoli
campaign. The Battalion suffered dreadfully from battle casualties and
sickness due to the harsh conditions. Over 1000 men served at Suvla and
when evacuated in December there were only 79 fit men. The Battalion
did good work and was specifically mentioned by the Commander In
Chief Sir Ian Hamilton for their part in the landing at Suvla Bay.
South Africa (1899-1902) - During the Second Boer war, the
Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers contributed manpower to two Volunteer
Service Companies, which served alongside the 2nd Battalion King’s
Shropshire Light Infantry. The first company arrived in South Africa in
April 1900 and saw action alongside 2 KSLI, including the capture of
Pretoria. The second company was deployed in 1901, where they
were employed garrisoning key positions and escorting supply
trains. The Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers were awarded the
battle honour for South Africa and this was carried forward
to The Herefordshire Regiment. The Regiment’s fallen are
recorded on the South Wall of Hereford Cathedral.
Ypres (1918) - 1 Herefords saw extensive service, after
Gallipoli throughout the Palestine campaign, including
the Battles of Beersheba, Jerusalem and Tel Asur.
In 1918, the Battalion was deployed to the European
Theatre, where they fought in some of the last great
battles of the War. They saw action at the Second Battle
of the Marne, a decisive Allied victory, before taking part
in the Fifth Battle of Ypres. There the Battalion saw heavy
fighting at the re-capture of Mount Kemmel and in the
vicinity of Menin. The Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General
Hilliam, later wrote to the Commanding Officer of the Battalion:
“Congratulations to you and all ranks of your splendid Battalion
for the excellent work done during the three days fighting”.
