Aim
To gain insights into how general practitioners (GPs) can implement and be supported in early medical
abortion (EMA) provision.
Content
EMA is safe, effective and can be delivered by GPs up to nine weeks (63 days) gestation. Although
GPs are the first point of contact for women seeking EMA in Australia, currently only about 10% are
certified to prescribe EMA medication. This creates access issues for women, particularly vulnerable
groups such as those in rural or remote communities, with limited financial backing and adolescents.
This session will provide insights about the:

steps and considerations needed to provide EMA in Australia
assessment and management of a patient opting for EMA
models of care and telehealth provision of EMA
the online support available with other EMA providers via AusCAPPS
delegate perspectives about the implementation of EMA.
We will present on how GPs can implement EMA in their practice, considering issues such as the
EMA process, regulatory requirements for providers, approaches to delivering EMA in practice (ie
appointment duration and billing) and patient counselling. The work of SPHERE Centre of Research
Excellence in Sexual and Reproductive Health for Women in Primary Care and the Australian
Contraception and Abortion Primary Care Practitioner Support (AusCAPPS) Network in supporting
primary care provision of EMA will be explained. Then, using a nominal group technique, delegates will
identify and prioritise key elements they consider to be important when implementing EMA, barriers to
service provision and potential solutions to these.
Goals
This session will:
•
•
support and encourage GP skills and confidence to implement EMA as a normal part of their
practice
provide an opportunity for delegates to identify key issues, barriers and solutions to providing
EMA in general practice.
