Global experience, evidence and WHO recommendations in developing training pathways into rural
areas of workforce need can be summarised as follows: (1) recruit students from rural backgrounds;
(2) locate health professional schools outside major cities; (3) clinical rotations in rural areas; (4)
curricular content that reflects rural health issues; and (5) continuous professional development
for rural health workers. What can be learnt from the successes, enablers and difficulties in these
rural training pathway approaches for other areas of health inequity, such as Aboriginal and Torres
Strait lslander health, delivery of primary healthcare, the clinical complexity of 21st century general
practice and workforce need in Australia? What factors are key to planning and integrating general
practice clinical content and experience across the training continuum of university medical degree,
prevocational hospital-based, postgraduate GP, community-based and specialised skills training, and
post-Fellowship professional development? This professional forum will draw on the experience of
the presenters to describe five aspects: (1) medical learner selection and support; (2) curriculum and
syllabus focus on primary healthcare; (3) training and mentoring factors; (4) contemporary Australian
sociocultural factors; and (5) strategic and policy initiatives. An interactive discussion with attendees is
a key feature of the session.
