Background
GPs play a key role in identifying and responding to family violence and intimate partner abuse.
There is international evidence that family violence has increased during the pandemic, and there are
particular challenges in telehealth consultations. The workshop is based on GPs’ needs identified
through workshops at WONCA conferences, the WHO Clinical handbook and the RACGP Abuse
and violence – working with our patients in general practice (5th edition). There will be a focus on the
practical issues in the pandemic.
Target group
GPs and GP registrars and other primary care clinicians who may be the first point of contact for
disclosure of family violence.
Workshop format
The workshop will focus on three areas of skills. It will consist of a brief overview, and then the
opportunity for participants to learn and actively practice new skills in a safe, supportive environment:
•
•
•
Identification and initial response and validation – how to identify, ask about and respond to initial
disclosure of family violence. This may include abuse of older persons, diverse family structures
and the particular issues of LGQBTIA+. Participants will generate and rehearse questions and
responses that they feel able to put into practice.
How to assess risk and assist women to reflect on their own safety and their children’s safety.
Participants will generate and rehearse questions and responses that they feel able to put into
practice.
Ongoing management and counselling strategies. Optimum management involves a
multidisciplinary approach, but there are effective counselling strategies that GPs can use.
The workshop will conclude with a plenary discussion focusing on the particular challenges of the
pandemic/telehealth and tips on self care.
