Aim
Acknowledge trauma and burnout within the medical community and explore strategies to facilitate
doctors’ health and wellbeing.

Content
This interactive workshop will draw on experiential teaching and learning styles, drawing on what
participants share about their own experiences.
H
The workshop will start with a comprehensive overview of exploring trauma, vicarious/shared trauma
and burnout; what it is and what it is not.
I
J
K
Participants will be divided into small groups to explore several concepts such as vicarious trauma,
burnout, reflect on how trauma informed/supportive their workplace is, barriers to seeking care for
themselves as well as what maintains their wellbeing and good mental health.
This will be followed by discussion and exploration of risk and protective factors, both individual,
organisational and systemic. The workshop will end with an exploration of self-care and stress
management strategies for doctors.
Many doctors with health issues do not access care and are reluctant to talk openly about their
struggles. This places doctors at increased risk of poor mental health.
Goals
For doctors to acknowledge the impact their work can have on their own health and wellbeing,
overcome barriers for seeking care and reflect with colleagues in a safe and contained space.
