Aim
To raise awareness of the activities happening worldwide on the development of the leadership role of
the nurse to enable UHC and develop a future plan.
Background
In 2019, at the WONCA Rural Health conference, participants endorsed the Albuquerque Statement
to support, advocate and promote nurses and midwives globally. The statement saw nurses as
collaborative leaders who could impact on service delivery in remote and rural area around the
world to enable universal healthcare coverage. It highlighted that there were significant gaps in the
nursing workforce and the need to strengthen the evidence base to enable multidisciplinary and
multiprofessional practice in the future.
Content
A series of short presentations will be given to demonstrate the breadth of issues raised at recent
international thought leadership workshops. The topic areas cover: education, capacity building,
support for nurses in the community, leadership, cultural humility and safety, a need for a sound
evidence base and input into policy change. These topics all have their own issues around enablers/
facilitators and barriers/challenges and needs that will be raised to inform the discussion. The
presentations will show the breadth of issues that have been raised and need to be addressed so
there is a need for the development of a strategic plan.
Following the presentations, participants will be engaged in discussions on issues that they believe
need should be taken into account and suggestions, especially thinking about the development of the
multidisciplinary team to address the needs of people living in rural and remote communities.
Outcome
To start to work on a strategic plan to enable the development of the Albuquerque Statement
internationally.
