Work–family balance/conciliation in the real world and the
modern family situation: A design thinking approach

Background
Conciliation between work and family is a hard task in modern life, especially when you are a
healthcare provider. Moreover, if we add to that a special family structure (single parent family, an
immigrant/foreign spouse, LGTB parenting) that may suppose an extra load to conciliate, not to
mention the frequent lack of acceptance from their societies and/or families.
Through design thinking, participants will explore the conciliation concept from a different perspective
to better understand the problem.
Didactic method
After a brief introduction explaining how to use design thinking over this topic and a summary of key
points to discuss (10 minutes, PowerPoint), small groups will be formed to facilitate working on a
specific problem.
The first part will include understanding the conciliation situation, analysing problems regarding it
and selecting one to solve (15 minutes). The following step is brainstorming solutions to the chosen
problem, deciding the optimal one to solve it and building a prototype of how to apply it (15 minutes).
Groups will report their conclusion and gather feedback to evaluate the need to reconstruct their
design (15 minutes). Finally, conclusions are established and some guidelines for clinical practice are
facilitated (five minutes).
Objectives
Create a safe space of confidence where participants will be given the chance to talk about difficulties
in conciliation and integration in society. Together we achieve conclusions about challenges and
solutions in daily life and we offer clear guidelines on how to cope with these situations and overcome
them.
