Data from a recent survey of doctors in the Sydney Local Health District suggested that only 47%
of the junior doctors have a GP, whereas the same survey has found that 78% of this population are
suffering from burnout. There is a significant link between burnout and a number of illnesses, including
cardiovascular disease. Junior doctors have significantly higher rates of depression, PTSD and suicide
than the population average.
Preventative health opportunities, immunisations and timely access to general healthcare needs are
being missed by this lack of access to a regular GP with a well-established relationship. This includes
failure to adequately diagnose and manage mental illness in junior doctors.
J
The research project is planned for the GPT1 group commencing in February 2023 and will establish
initially (via a survey) the current percentage who have a GP. Through small group work and facilitated
discussion around wellbeing and burnout, the group will be invited to consider the barriers and benefits
of having a GP and how to gain the most from this relationship.
K
The survey to establish the number of the same population who have a GP will be repeated at the end
of the term, July 2023.
I
The research project aims to establish whether the intervention of the facilitated small group discussion
has an impact on the number of registrars who have a GP, as well as providing qualitative data around
the barriers to this occurring.
