Listening well is a key skill for general practitioners, yet little attention is paid during medical education
to developing the skill. History taking can become more focused on uncovering diagnostic features
than understanding what the patient is trying to communicate. It is easy to recognise when a doctor is
not listening, but what are the features of ‘listening well’ and how should it be taught and learnt?
The theme of listening will be introduced with a scene from GP The Musical and explored further with a
reflective writing task. Participants will be asked to reflect on and discuss their own listening skills and
to share tips for how listening can be taught and learnt.
