Aim of session
To provide insight into the key strengths, challenges and pitfalls of point-of-care testing (POCT) for
acute, chronic and infectious disease management within resource-rich and resource-limited settings,
and to share best practise for safe, quality-assured POCT in general practice.
Session description
POCT refers to rapid sample testing by professionals nearby the patient. POCT supports clinical
decision making during or very close to the time of consultation, reducing the need for patient follow
up. The need for better, instant management decisions in primary care, exciting technological POCT
innovations and growing evidence of the added value for patients make POCT an important topic for
daily general practice in the coming years. This also implies that focus is needed on training, proper
use, quality assurance and patient safety.
In this interactive workshop we will: (1) discuss the evidence base of POCT solutions for acute, chronic
and infectious disease management; (2) showcase and discuss best practices, challenges and failures
of POCT networks in primary care settings (resource limited and resource rich, rural and urban areas);
and (3) present the key principles for establishing and maintaining a POCT service.
