The current study of the quality of life (QoL) only focuses on dementia patients. The caregiver’s
QoL can be severely declined, especially in physical strain, sense of burden, psychological stress,
depression and anxiety. There’s still low evidence regarding the caregiver’s QoL for individuals with
dementia. This review aims to evaluate QoL-oriented interventions for the caregiver of individuals
with dementia.
This review is made by collecting data from online databases including PubMed, Google Scholar,
ScienceDirect and Scopus using the key words ‘Dementia’ AND ‘Physicians, Family’ OR ‘Therapeutic
Alliance’ AND ‘Caregivers’ AND ‘Quality of Life’. We obtained data from several randomised clinical
trials conducted over the last seven years and assessed the quality using the Newcastle–Ottawa
Scale (NOS).
In all, 31 studies were included in this review. Of these studies, 27 showed that QoL-oriented
interventions (cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT], modified-mindfulness-based CBT, physical
activity, etc) positively affect the QoL of the caregiver, while three studies showed that some of
these interventions (caregiver training, heart-focused breathing, virtual communities of practice) are
ineffective to improve the QoL. Conversely, one study (Assistive Home Tech) negatively affects the
QoL. Based on quality assessment using NOS, 31 studies are considered high quality, and 17 studies
are considered moderate quality.
Most of the QoL-oriented interventions are effective to improve the QoL of the caregiver.
However, there are many factors that may influence the QoL of the caregiver. Further studies regarding
this are needed to optimise the management.
