The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (NACCHO)–Royal Australian
College of General Practitioners (RACGP) national guide to preventive healthcare for Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people (National Guide) 4th edition is being published late 2023, synthesising
evidence and recommendations to provide guidance to primary healthcare teams on issues that
are preventable and important (priorities) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and
that are actionable in primary healthcare settings. In relation to family abuse and violence (FAV), the
impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, family, community and culture
is central due to the catastrophic disruption it caused, and continues to cause. The fabric of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander family, community, culture and life was torn apart through British invasion
and colonisation, resulting in intergenerational trauma, ongoing racism, discrimination and violence
towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Western feminist construct dominates the
discourse of FAV and does not encompass the complexities that exist in FAV for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander peoples, families and communities. Nor can mainstream individually targeted prevention
and intervention programs meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families or
communities.
We will explore the impact colonisation has had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,
families and communities with respect to FAV and how specific approaches and programs are needed
to address prevention.
