Consequences of exposure to domestic violence on
child health and development: A systematic review of
the literature
Dr Humbert De Freminville, Morgane Bruno
University of Lyon
Introduction
The exposure of children to domestic violence is an underestimated form of abuse. Each year in
France, 143,000 children are said to live in violent homes. Laws are evolving. They tend to recognise
the children’s status as victims and to better protect them. The role of primary healthcare professionals
is to identify the symptoms developed by children in order to better manage them. The objective of
our work was to determine the consequences on the health and development of the child in order to
facilitate this identification during a consultation.
Methods
We performed a systematic review of the literature using four databases, namely PubMed, Scopus,
Web of Science and Google Scholar. Thirty articles published between 2000 and 2020 were included.
The PRISMA guidelines were used as a guide for the development of this work.
Results
We identified four main themes: (1) mental health consequences; (2) physical health consequences;
(3) growth consequences; and (4) learning consequences.
Conclusion
The impact of violence differs greatly according to the age and development of the child. Infants
present aspecific symptomatic manifestations and a staturo-ponderal insufficiency, which may be
related to an attachment disorder. In children aged 2–12 years, the prevalence of obesity increases.
Adolescents are more likely to present with depression, suicidal thoughts and conduct disorders.
