Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) have increasingly developed in many countries in the past
five decades. While the networks differ in their development trajectory, maturity, sustainability and
operational focus, many of their features are similar across countries and settings.

Members of our team conducted two robust reviews of the literature and an interview study and
created the first global database on PBRN profiles with a temporal scope over 50 years.

Supported by the WONCA Working Party on Research, we assembled a global PBRN interest group
to guide the development of internetwork collaborations and cross-continental research opportunities,
to advocate for the role of PBRNs in primary care through a global collaborative environment, to
mentor the development of PBRNs, especially in countries with less developed primary care, and to
create shared resources for knowledge exchange.
In the first part, this forum will provide a brainstorming opportunity for WONCA members to get
acquainted with the PBRN initiative. The focus will be on the priority of cross-continental research
collaborations and the potential of using federated data for global research. In the second part, two
research presentations will illustrate what research is done by the International Consortium of Primary
Care Big Data Researchers (INTRePID; www.intrepidprimarycare.org). INTRePID is an international
PBRN with contributors from 10 countries in five of the seven continents of the world that participate in
the WONCA initiative. There will be a presentation on the history of this collaboration, how it came to
be and the successes and challenges of doing international comparative research. Then, examples of
research outputs will also be presented. Our goal is to expand this activity globally with the support of
the WONCA PBRN initiative.
