Background
Primary healthcare has the capacity to respond to the health needs of vulnerable groups, such as
immigrants, comprehensively. Immigrants have poorer health status than the general population due
to various social factors. In addition, known as the ‘healthy migrant effect’, the health advantages that
migrants enjoy at the time of arrival are quickly eroded, and cultural, language and socioeconomic
barriers arise for migrants to navigate the health system of the host country. However, studies show
that immigrants are exposed to various challenges due to their immigrant status.
A culturally sensitive approach is advised to the health workers who provide services to a culturally
diverse population. Self-awareness of personal prejudices is the first step to developing a culturally
sensitive attitude. Acquiring such cultural competence needs a well-established education program.
In many countries, this competency is included in undergraduate medical education; however,
evidence on postgraduate and continuous medical education activities is limited.
Aim
To reflect on the experiences of migrant health and discuss cultural competency in the context of
family medicine.
Methods
After a brief introduction, a cultural competency scale will be applied to the attendees.
A short presentation on the topic will be followed by a discussion facilitated through semistructured
questions. The attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their experiences.
The session will end with a summary of the key points.
