Objective
Reminiscence therapies have been reported to improve the physical and mental health of institutional
residents, dementia and depressive symptoms. However, few studies have explored the impact of
structured group reminiscence therapy on health-related quality of life in community-dwelling older
adults. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of structured group reminiscence therapy
on cognitive function, depressive status, self-esteem, satisfaction with life and sleep quality.
Methods
This randomised controlled trial was conducted in healthy older adults living in the community. The
elders were randomly assigned to either a six-week structured reminiscence group (n = 16) or control
group (n = 32). The Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ), the 15-item Geriatric
Depression Scale (GDS-15), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSE)
and Chinese–Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (C-PSQI) were administered and evaluated at baseline
and after the project was completed.
Results
The mean age of the participants was 72.59 ± 7.35 years and about half the participants were
male. After six weeks of follow up, the C-PSQI was significantly improved in the intervention group
compared with the control group (P = 0.0098). There were no statistically significant improvements in
SPMSQ (P = 0.680), GDS-15 (P = 0.309), RSE (P = 0.662) and SWLS (P = 0.094) scores. However, the
intervention group reported slight improvements in GDS-15, RSE and SWLS scores. These findings
indicated a trend of improving health-related quality of life after the intervention.
Conclusions
This study showed that sleep quality could be significantly improved with a six-week structured group
reminiscence therapy of the relative healthy elderly in the community. A trend of improving depressive
symptoms, life satisfaction and self-esteem was also found after the intervention, although it was not
statistically significant.
