Objective
To use the Boston matrix model to assess and classify the general practitioner’s model office in
Sichuan Province, then to analyse the factors.
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional study between January 2022 and June 2022, using electronic
structured questionnaires, to investigate 21 city-state general practitioners’ model offices in Sichuan
Province. This study explores the operation effect of the general practitioners’ model offices from three
dimensions: basic conditions, health services and effect evaluation. Based on the BCG matrix, the
basic conditions and health services of the offices (the abundance of medical resource allocation) are
taken as the abscissa, and the effect evaluation (the operation effect) as the ordinate, and the general
practitioners’ model offices are divided into four types (Stars, Cash cow, Question marks and Dogs).
Result
The results of this study showed that a total of 99 model offices of the top five general practitioners in
cities and prefectures in the province had been recovered, with an effective recovery rate of 94.3%.
The results of this study show that the median of medical resource allocation abundance (the sum of
basic conditions and health services) is 0.46; the median of operating results (effect evaluation) is 0.31.
The BCG matrix model is constructed according to the abscissa of the allocation of medical resources
and the ordinate of the operation result, and the general practitioner model office is divided into Stars,
Cash cow, Question marks and Dogs; in this study there were 32 (32.3%) Stars, 18 (18.2%) Cash
cows, 18 (18.2%) Question marks and 31 (31.3%) Dogs.
Conclusion
The Star offices had a high allocation of resource allocation and operating effects, providing reference
for other categories; the Cash cow offices need to optimise the operating mechanism to achieve better
operating results.
