Aim
Family physicians often care for patients with chronic wounds, and they can best serve patients if they
have knowledge and proficient skills in chronic wound care. In this session, it’s aimed to provide family
physicians with up-to-date information on chronic wound care and to enable them to apply modern
wound care products effectively.
Content
In the presentation plan, up-to-date information will be given on chronic wound staging, TIME
principles (T: Tissue management; I: Inflammation and Infection control; M: Moisture balance;
E: Epithelial/Edge advancement), the triangle of wound assessment (the wound bed, the wound
edge, the periwound skin) and a holistic approach to the wound patient. Along with sample wound
photographs, practice will be made on chronic wound management in primary care.
Goals
The triangle of wound assessment was developed with wound care experts from around the world
to bring a more simple and structured approach to wound management. It provides a holistic
framework that guides the user systematically through each area of the wound, to carefully assess
the entire wound, while also considering the person behind the wound and the social context of that
person. After assessment, it then provides a systematic approach, to go from assessment to setting
management goals, to guide optimal treatment choice. Family physicians will be able to better manage
their patients with chronic wounds with the triangle of wound assessment.
