Pain is an output from the brain secondary to interpretation of sensory input. Persistent pain is thus
influenced by context: multiple biopsychosocial factors affect immune and stress responses, altering
the experience of pain. Osteoarthritis (OA) is an example of persistent pain that is affected by the
‘whole person condition’. Consideration of factors that modulate inflammatory processes, tissue
sensitivities and behavioural responses is necessary.
Evidence suggests we need a paradigm shift in our approach to assessing and managing OA to:

change the message (that we give to patients)
change the treatment focus (from the tissues to all biopsychosocial factors)
change the ownership (from the healthcare professional to patient).
This interactive workshop will follow the Pegasus Health Clinical Quality unique peer education
approach. We will explore the management of persistent pain using a case example of OA of the knee,
including a review of the latest evidence and some useful resources available for clinicians.
