Building and Industrial Applications
Department
Some of the largest energy users and most
carbon-intense applications in today’s economy
are high-tech buildings and industrial systems.
Building and Industrial Applications researchers
work to improve energy efficiency through
research, development, demonstrations,
and deployment across high-tech buildings,
industrial applications, and federal operations.
High-tech buildings such as laboratories,
cleanrooms, data centers, and hospitals are
characterized by large baseloads, continuous
operation, and high energy-use intensities.
Operating up to 24 hours per day, they are
essential to the national economy, and are
an often-untapped opportunity for energy

savings. Building and Industrial Applications
researchers develop energy management,
energy efficiency, and demand management
practices, policies, analysis, and technologies,
including the ISO 50001 standard. They also
support the implementation of sustainable
policies and practices in the public sector by
developing ways for institutions to minimize
the negative environmental impact of the
products they buy. The team helps public-sector
facilities comply with increasing expectations to
incorporate sustainability into their operations.
By providing technical assistance to develop
contract language, procurement systems, and
reporting requirements the team helps to make
sustainable acquisition standard operating
practice.
