CalCharge
Berkeley Lab’s extensive experience with
industry partnership contributes significantly
to the advances researchers and industry are
making in energy storage technologies. One
prominent example of our success in partnering
with industry is CalCharge, a consortium of
emerging and established companies, start-ups,
and research institutions — including Berkeley
Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,
and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
(SLAC) National Accelerator Laboratory.
CalCharge, which is operated by the New Energy
Nexus, provides energy storage stakeholders
structure, value, and access to the national
labs to accelerate technologies to market. As
a founding member of CalCharge, Berkeley
Lab aims to anchor a thriving ecosystem
to accelerate our nation’s energy storage
innovation and deployment.

Anchoring a Thriving
Ecosystem to Accelerate
Energy Storage: Bay Area
Battery Summit (BABS)
ETA’s Energy Storage and Distributed
Resources Division pioneered the concept of
bringing together researchers, academia and
industry each year to catalyze collaboration
and drive innovation in the energy storage
space.
Each year, leading researchers come together
with policymakers, pioneering companies,
and startups to enjoy an active exchange
of ideas. This year, the diverse attendees
including entrepreneurs and investors
focused on implementation of the U.S.
Department of Energy’s Energy Storage Grand
Challenge (ESGC). Scaling technologies from
the lab to manufacturing and the marketplace
is a central theme. Three of DOE’s Bay Area
national labs have rotated cohosting the
summit each year since 2015. Topics have
included everything from energy storage
beyond batteries to electrified mobility and
facilitating an evolving grid. The 2021 BABS
will be hosted by Berkeley Lab.
