▪ Community education starting in the home, access to feminine [hygiene products] right in the
bathroom, woman/girl sports activities, treating children in an equitable way, teaching gender-neutral
ways in school, LGBTQ+ training available to teachers slowly but is happening, changing the language
that is currently in handbooks, etc.
▪ The bias or pressure on girls to & be this perfect look, right clothes, pressure to be sexy in that way. If
they had the right encouragement -- [tell them] you
don't have to do that. &we as fathers can give the
right care and attention to our daughters [so] that
they aren't seeking it in other ways&. Build up
their confidence.
▪ Stay-at-home dads are frowned upon sometimes
and made to feel less manly.
▪ Allow for flexibility for working moms who carry
the burden of running a household and earning a
living.
Other things on Youth Program participants’
minds:
Teachers should actually start paying
attention when kids' behavior is changing
drastically or they see someone seems to be
around them more and impacting them
negatively, take action and don't pass it off
[because] some of that is bullying and
teachers won't listen.
I've seen same thing; I used to get bullied,
and I would go to principal and [they] really
wouldn't do anything.
People use gay as an insult and that isn't
appropriate and should be addressed.
ON AGE DISCRIMINATION:
YOUTH PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS
I think it's unfair that a lot of shootings is
targeted toward children and from 16 year
olds to babies. A lot of that stuff is targeted
to that age group, which is completely unfair.
We didn't do anything and for you to come
into our safe zone and make it unsafe is very
unfair.
Yes it's very unfair, I feel very unsafe.
I think the reason kids are targeted in school
shootings is because kids are pretty much
defenseless. Even with lockdowns, it's
common knowledge so anyone can get
around it.
Pro Action of Steuben and Yates, Inc. Community Needs Assessment 2022 – 2025
There is/was something that happened a
while ago and a friend wanted to transition
into male and people decided to continue
using, she pronouns and his dead name. I
think stuff like that should be addressed
more often besides just not doing anything
about it.
In the area of age discrimination:
▪ Community education, making sure that
they know that their voices matter no matter
what the age is, make sure they feel
comfortable sharing, having a platform
available to them to make them feel heard
and comfortable, group via zoom or elderly
coffee chat, tap into school districts to beat
ageism, have a program where grandparents
can come into read or talk with kids
(inclusion).
▪ Explicitly define children's/ students' rights.
▪ Give opportunity to host multi-generational
activities. Don't make assumptions. Host
activities, always talk to each other.
