Elementary School-age Children: Opioid Use
Four people offered observations about the impact of opioids with children 6 – 12 years.
• I have seen kids younger and younger trying new drugs.
• Increased usage (both in number and dosage); adults out of the household due to treatment or
incarceration; less supervision and increased risks [of exposure] to unsafe people and substances;
experimentation in substances (vaping).
• Kids being neglected.
• They lack the social and emotional input of parents and suffer trauma. Anxiety and depression are
prevalent.
Youth: Primary Mental Health Problems
Eight people responded to the question about mental health issues among middle and high school-age
youth and chose an average of 4.4 of the multiple-choice answers each. Depression, anxiety, and trauma
top the list.
