The graphs per county below indicate the number and percentage of adults aged 20 and older self0report
having a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30.0 (obese). Respondents were considered obese if their
Body Mass Index (BMI) was 30 or greater. Body mass index (weight [kg]/height [m]2) was derived from
self0report of height and weight. Excess weight may indicate an unhealthy lifestyle and puts individuals at
risk for further health issues.
Nutrition: Obesity (Youth)
The New York State Department of Health classifies each county as low risk, medium risk or high risk on
various health indicators. As it relates to overweight and obese child and youth, Steuben County fell into
the high-risk category for students at all levels (elementary, middle and high school) who are overweight
or obese (with 37.5% of students having this status) and for students at the elementary level who are
overweight or obese (33.8% of students having this status).
Yates County fell into the high-risk category for students at all levels (elementary, middle and high school)
who are overweight or obese (with 39% of students having this status) and for students at the elementary
level who are overweight or obese (32% of students having this status).
