Language Adventures: Embracing Languages and Cultures in Primary School
Linguistic landscape activities
Ask students to look for signs in different languages in their local communities
- some can also be found on the internet. To prompt a discussion, pupils could
be asked questions such as: Why are these in different languages? What is the
effect? Can you translate them into English/Irish? Examples of these could
include signs such as those of food shops, ethnic restaurants, roads, etc.
Language exploration with food items
Food items in their packaging can be brought to the classroom for activities
involving various languages and cultures. Pupils can be encouraged to look at
the labels, identify how words from the lists of ingredients, the nutritional
information, etc. translate across languages, and add translations of the words
associated with the food item into additional languages. Matching games can
be created, where students match various words with their equivalents in
different languages, using different food items. Pupils could be supported to
create their own labels for the food item of their choice. Scavenger hunts can
be played with pupils e.g., they could gather the required ingredients for a
particular traditional recipe/dish from a whole range of items scattered around
the classroom.
