Language Adventures: Embracing Languages and Cultures in Primary School
Online and printed brochures
Explore some country-specific websites of big, global supermarkets.
Supermarket brochures from different countries are easily available online. They
depict local preferences and highlight cultural similarities and differences.
Distribute some examples in a language other than English or Irish. Pupils could
compile a collage of words which are similar in English/Irish and any other
language. For a cross-curricular maths activity pupils could compare prices, add
up the prices of the individual items that make up a favourite dinner, etc.
Pupils can explore a website or a brochure in a language they don’t already
speak. These could be tourism-related brochures or information brochures for
an amusement park, zoo, etc. You can ask questions about opening and closing
times and dates, prices, addresses, etc. This is a good activity to help explore a
language that pupils do not speak, by using the cues from similar
websites/brochures in languages they already know.
The activity promotes an integrated development of literacy skills. The
exploration can also reveal certain cultural, social characteristics and stereotypes
linked to different cultures.
