Language Adventures: Embracing Languages and Cultures in Primary School
word for “boy” is made up of the character for “rice field” and the character that
represents “strength”. In French (and similarly for other languages derived from
Latin), the word “copain”, (friend, boyfriend) is derived from “the person you share
bread (pain) with (co-). In different cultures, words created to identify the same
thing have originated in different contexts. For example, the same type of
transport can be named “tube” because of its shape,“underground” or “subway”
because of its underground routes, “métro” (in French, short for “Chemin de fer
métropolitain”) because it runs inside a town.
Ask pupils if they would like to make their own multilingual books, using all of
the languages in the class.
