Worksheet Exercise 1
Students use space provided to divide the phrases into categories (without being told what the
categories are).
Students chosen during the discussion feedback the ideas.
Once all the ideas have been shared, explain that these utterances represent three different types of
language we use in the classroom:
Content Language:
language related to the topic we are studying (i.e. Language of learning) LofL
Working Language:
in order to be able to work in a group or a pair, to take turns etc., we need this type of language
(i.e. Language for learning) LfL
Unplanned Language:
language that we need to use to express our ideas, thoughts and feelings or to explain things that
we can use at any point (Language through learning) LtL
Some utterances may be categorised in multiple groups, depending on the circumstance.
