A perfect scenic route for the whole family,
the Savage Mill Trail is a level rail trail with
stunning views of the Little Patuxent River
and Savage Mill. The trail was formed from
what remains of a 1902 continuation of the
Patuxent Branch railroad and takes travelers
over the one-of-a-kind Bollman Truss
Bridge, a twin-spar bridge installed in 1887.
It’s the last surviving example of a style of
iron bridge often seen in the 1800s, earning
it a National Historic Landmark plaque.
While this trail is conveniently located
near a major highway and busy shopping
center, the combination of White Oak trees
surrounding the trail and the babbling river
creates the impression that you’re deep in
the wilderness.
During your outdoor journey through
Howard County, the Patuxent Challenge
is a great way to document your
accomplishments and find your next
outdoor adventure in Maryland! The
challenge is made up of outdoor activities
that give participants the opportunity to
explore various sites along the Patuxent
River Watershed. Take a selfie of you and
your family completing the predetermined
challenges for a chance to win a prize!
There are several Patuxent Challenge sites
throughout Howard County (even a few
mentioned on this page), so what are you
waiting for? Go explore the outdoors in
Howard County!
