Nacogdoches offers a thriving medical community
and comprehensive health services. With two major
hospitals, two outpatient surgery centers, home-based
and community-based healthcare services, skilled nursing
care and rehabilitation facilities, assisted-living facilities
and housing for the elderly, residents don’t have to travel
beyond the city for quality care. For more information, see

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Judy B. McDonald Public Library

This information hub provides books, DVDs, audiobooks,
eBooks, eAudiobooks, databases and a wide range of
tools for school or job development. The library also offers
a variety of innovative programs such as technology help
and training, S.T.E.A.M. and Makerspace workshops for
children, adult events for learning, and entertainment. Need
to use something like a cake pan, small tools, hotspots,
chromebooks, a telescope or bike repair tools? Items like
these can be checked out from the Library of Things and
returned after use. Cardholders also have borrowing
privileges at SFA’s Steen Library.
Nacogdoches Master Gardeners

The Nacogdoches County Master Gardeners are local
volunteers in our community who work with the Texas
AgriLife Extension Service to share horticultural knowledge
and give back to the community through classes, seminars
and horticultural projects like the beautiful Demonstration
Garden located at the corner of E. Main and University
Drive. Visit their website to find out how you can become a
certified Master Gardener in the Garden Capital of Texas!

PARKS & RECREATION
City of Nacogdoches Recreation Division
C.L. Simon Recreation Center, 1112 North Street

The Recreation Center offers a wide variety of children and
adult classes, gymnastics, zumba and Tai Chi, children and
adult sports leagues, open gyms and open sports play,
weight room and a gymnastics area for children’s birthday
parties. Liberty Hall, park pavilions and sports equipment
are also available for rent through the recreation center.

Nacogdoches proudly boasts 20 city parks encompassing
more than 400 acres. Wooded, open grasslands, small
ponds and recreational equipment – swings, slides,
splashpad, pavilions, trails, disc golf courses, pickleball
courts – offer many outdoor activities. New additions
include pickleball courts at Maroney Park (12) and Banita
Creek Park (6), brand new park restrooms available at
Festival Park and Pecan Acres Park and an all-abilities
playground at Ritchie Street Park. The Lanana Creek
trail runs from the Clint Dempsey Soccer Complex to the
north loop and follows Lanana Creek for three and a half
miles (some areas of this trail are currently closed). The
scenic route winds through the SFA campus and the Mast
Arboretum. The Banita Creek Trail begins at Main St. and
Pearl St. (the Hitch Lot) and goes north for 1.9 miles. Or,
take your best friend to Dog Park Nacogdoches. Located
at Banita Creek Park, this off-leash dog park provides a
place where dogs can socialize and exercise in a safe,
clean and well-maintained fenced-in area.
Nacogdoches Senior Center

Active residents ages 60 and older can get a hot, fresh
noon meal prepared by a chef Monday through Friday.
The Senior Center also offers free activities and classes
to all seniors, including bridge, bingo, 42, dominoes,
chess, Chinese Mahjong, gardening, sketching, yoga, Tai
Chi, Functional Fitness, line dancing, knitting, an outdoor
walking trail and much more!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Retirees who are interested in sharing the knowledge
and skills they’ve acquired or who want to try something
new will find an abundance of volunteer opportunities
available. Through our numerous non-profit agencies,
medical and educational facilities, historic sites, cultural
and civic organizations, and religious institutions, retirees
can choose to work with and for just about any cause.
