“no matter what people, the world, the
church say, we are children of God.”
I think that really resonated with our
youth, especially our seniors, who are
embarking on a major life transition.
Also, having two generations of Matins
singing together with chaperone Howard
Tempero joining us for the finale of In
This Very Room was meaningful for all.
What would you like Plymouth to
know about the Matins and how can
the congregation continue to help
support this choir?
These are busy, engaged, committed
kids. The Matins are difference-makers
in our community and their school
worlds. The best thing Plymouth can do
is to continue to encourage, recognize,
and appreciate their efforts. There is no
shortage of opportunities open to our
youth, and the fact that they choose
to give their time to this organization
matters. The financial support this
congregation offers is transformative.
By patronizing our fundraisers Plymouth
makes our life-changing tours possible.
What kind of music do you like and/or
who inspires you in the world of music?
For the past several years I haven’t done
much recreational music listening. Really,
my favorite music is anything I’m in the
audience for. It’s so important to support
live performers as much as we can.
My spouse Elyse is my main musical
inspiration: her latest obsessions become
our family’s playlist! I really enjoy the
genius of Jacob Collier and the sisterbrother duo Lawrence. If we’re talking
classics, I was raised on a healthy
balanced diet of Queen and Eagles.
Is there anything you’d like to add
that we haven’t asked?
I’m so grateful to the parents of the
Youth Executive Committee (YEC) who
have shouldered so many administrative
duties this past year. There are real
limitations on the time I am able to
devote to this position and the success
of the year would not have happened
without their support. Plymouth is
very fortunate to have the leadership
and gifts of Christopher Goodson
and Sohee Lee. Their vision and drive
to maintain and grow what is great
about this place musically is so very
valuable. Finally, my deepest thank you
to the entire Plymouth community: the
congregation, pastoral staff, and support
staff for the incredibly warm, genuine
welcome and appreciation they have
shown for our work this past year. I hope
Plymouth realizes how special, unique,
and meaningful the Matins program is.
It is humbling to be part of such a rich,
treasured tradition in our church.
