Get to Know Ted Brimeyer
Ted Brimeyer has been leading our
Matins Choir for a year and we’re lucky
to have him! While our Matins and
their parents know Ted, we thought
Plymouth’s members would like to get
to know our Matins Choir Director.
Now that you’ve been at Plymouth for a
year, are there favorite Matins memories
or moments that come to mind?
It goes without saying that Tour is quite
special. Our final concert pre-tour stood
out with the beginning of a new tradition
singing “In This Very Room” encircling
the audience with Matins alumni joining
in. I really enjoy our opportunities to
collaborate as a K-12 choral program
on Singing Church and Pie Sundays!
The sweet sounds of our young singers’
unchanged voices is something I don’t
work with frequently in my “day job” and I
love how Plymouth nurtures children and
youth voices through their entire school
career. Easter Sunday was particularly
musically inspiring to me. Having the
opportunity to partner with the Plymouth
Brass to put together special works for
major church events is memorable — with
our voices, the horns, and Sohee’s amazing
organ-playing soaring into the rafters!
Christmas Eve (while past my bed time!)
was special. The beauty of the candle-lit
sanctuary and Matins from years past
returning to sing together once again really
helped still the spirit of Christmas in me.
You survived your first Matins Tour!
What was the best part of tour and
what surprised you?
There were so many highlights to Tour!
The bonds forged and strengthening of
our Matins community is definitely tops.
The way our small groups connected
12
led by our awesome chaperones was
significant and special. Our youth
did such an awesome job connecting
with senior citizens at our concerts
throughout the week. Being so warmly
welcomed into Norfield Church by their
enthusiastic, authentic congregation is a
model for how all of us should welcome
guests in our lives. I got to visit two
new states on Tour - I’ve never been to
Connecticut or New York. Seeing all the
sights, sounds, and smells of New York
City was memorable. I really enjoyed
getting to walk the High Line, have
ice cream for lunch at Chelsea Market,
and see some killer artwork at MoMa
(Museum of Modern Art) with my NYC
group. And of course, getting to meet
and see Pastor Jack in action was really
great. Lessons learned: more frequent
bathing opportunities are essential.
Do you have a favorite Matins song? If
not, is there a performance in the past
year that sticks with you?
I feel a bit like picking a favorite song
is choosing a favorite child, it’s just
not possible. I can say, however, that
my favorite Matins songs are the ones
that touch our singers and audiences.
The second half of our final concert
was particularly memorable, with our
singers really connecting with the
words they were singing. Mark Miller’s
“Child of God” specifically comes to
mind, continually reminding us that
