“Diversity, complexity, adaptation and resilience can only be created by diverse iterative
processes and never with the top-down cookie cutter, however sophisticated,” Ken Wilson
explains. “Such work needs scaling-out, not scaling up, because ultimately its power resides in
its limited human-landscape scale. To grow such work means supporting self-replication and
in finding and strengthening multiple channels for getting smaller grants into diverse hands.
Money itself – or rather the need to move it “efficiently” – can be fatal when it is given the
driving seat.”
In order to produce tangible results, tree planting must be part of a broader environmental
action plan: one that is driven by genuine care, prioritizes biodiversity conservation, actively
reduces carbon emissions, and has a solid foundation of support from its local community.
