The current predicament has led us to believe that this problem is age-old, yet in reality, only
in the last 50 years has this failing system become established and legitimized - so the
opportunity for new solutions is never as far as it seems. This is especially true in a future that
no-one can be certain of and undoubtedly will innately experience flux.
As it is now, advocacy remains a paradox. Multi-stakeholder systems without the public
sphere to bear witness have been shown to best prioritize the interests of the parties that
have most influence, leaving environmental advocacy at best only second in line.
Ultimately, fractured national interests dictating environmental protection only do well to
conserve imperialistic histories for future winners, but if we’re serious about the current and
future state of our oceans, our blue planet needs to be a global responsibility.
