Oysters have been an essential part of the Chesapeake Bay’s culture for centuries.
Indigenous people regularly harvested the shellfish, often by hand-picking them from reefs
close to shore. When colonists started arriving in the early 1600s, they noticed the impressive
oyster population leading to Captain John Smith describing them as
